🦃 HeadsUp Winnipeg: Your Thanksgiving Price Playbook

Thanksgiving is Monday, October 13, and this weekend is when most Winnipeg shoppers are hitting the stores for turkeys, ham, stuffing, and all the trimmings. Flyers are buzzing, crowds will be thick (especially in St. Vital, Transcona, and Polo Park), and prices are moving fast. We’ve got you covered with the latest data on where to shop and what to grab right now.

Also please let us Thank You for trying out this newsletter and any feedback you’ve sent back so far on what’s useful and what isn’t. Please bear with us on the website as the designing is new for us and we are working diligently to make it better to look at.

📊 BEST DEALS THIS WEEK IN WINNIPEG

We tracked 232 grocery items across Winnipeg this week to see who really comes out cheapest:

                • 🛒 Walmart dominates with 122 lowest-price items (52.6%).

                • 🛒 Superstore and No Frills split second place with 55 items each (23.7%).

                For most shoppers, this means:

                • Walmart = best bet for turkeys, ham, and everyday staples.

                • Superstore & No Frills = strong for produce and pantry deals.

👉 Bottom line: Walmart leads overall, but if you’re making multiple stops, Superstore and No Frills can save you money on sides and fresh produce.

🦃 Turkey, Ham & Big Meal Staples

                • Turkeys: Lowest prices hit the $1/lb mark, but stock won’t last. Walmart and Superstore are leading in flyers, while Sobeys and Foodfare are pricier but often carry premium birds.

                • Ham: Prices are higher than last year (inflation 👎), but still cheaper per serving than turkey. Look for family packs at Superstore.

                • Stuffing, potatoes, carrots, onions: Walmart has the edge this week, but check No Frills for sharp markdowns on bulk bags.

Pro tip: Buy turkey early—by October 10, Winnipeg freezers are usually picked clean.

                🥕 Seasonal Sides for Cheap

                • Carrots, cabbage, and apples are running close to $1/lb at Walmart, Giant Tiger, and Superstore.

                • Pie pumpkins are hot right now—prices could rise if we get an early frost. Grab them this weekend for both pies and soups.

                • Try low-cost sides that stretch: butternut squash soup or apple crisp (under $5 a batch).

🥒 Stretch Your Groceries: Preservation Hacks

Don’t let leftovers (or cheap produce) go to waste:

                • Freeze apple slices (lemon-water bath first).

                • Cook applesauce now, freeze for winter.

                • Ferment cabbage into sauerkraut—future-you will thank you in January.

👩‍🌾 Local Flavor & Community Wins

Thanksgiving in Manitoba isn’t just turkey. Expect perogies, bannock, and cabbage rolls on the table. Support local shops like Cantor’s or De Luca’s for handmade sides, or pick some up at farmers’ markets (St. Norbert still going strong).

                Community events to know:

                • Harvest Manitoba Empty Bowls Auction – October 16

                • Local food drives – great chance to give back with any extras you find on sale

                🍬 Halloween’s Coming Too…

Thanksgiving first, but spooky season is creeping in. Candy prices could jump up to 20% right before Halloween, so stash your kids’ favorites now. Pumpkins for carving? Same deal: cheap this week, scarce by the end of the month.

                💡 Pro Winnipeg Shopper Tips

                • Shop early this weekend for the best stock (crowds hit by Sunday afternoon).

                • Use flyer apps like Flipp to compare on the fly.

                • Don’t be shy—chat with market vendors; regulars often get the insider scoop.

                • Mix in local traditions—stretch your meal with perogies or bannock (cheaper, filling, and delicious).

Happy Thanksgiving shopping, Winnipeg! 🦃 Whether you’re team turkey, team ham, or team perogy, shop smart, save big, and enjoy the feast.

Late February in Winnipeg means we are in the deep winter stretch. The days are finally getting noticeably longer but the parking lots are still freezing and the wind chill is keeping us bundled up. Festival du Voyageur wraps up this weekend so it is your last chance to grab some maple taffy and enjoy the French Canadian energy in St. Boniface before we all settle in for the wait for spring.
