The Short Version: Winnipeg groceries are getting political. We track massive price gaps on chicken and beef, plus how Manitoba’s new pricing study could finally bring relief.

        We’re Building a Website!

Hey Winnipeg! It is Friday, February 27, and we are staring down a serious cold snap. Saturday is bringing brutal highs around -21°C. The city's residential parking ban is officially in effect until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, so double check your street signs to avoid a hefty ticket. If you need to restock the fridge or prep some big batch meals, today is absolutely the day to do it. Grab your reusable bags and let us get this sorted fast so you can stay cosy indoors all weekend long.

If you are brave enough to venture out, it is Polar Bear Weekend at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. They are running special activities to celebrate International Polar Bear Day. For a more relaxed vibe, head to The Forks on Sunday afternoon for their Learn to Winter sessions by the fire. Just make sure to bundle up and keep your pets indoors as much as possible with these freezing temperatures.

        What’s coming This Week?

        Coming Soon!

Get ready to lose an hour of sleep. Daylight Saving Time begins next Sunday, March 8, at 2:00 a.m. You will need to set your manual clocks forward, and it is the perfect reminder to swap out the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Also, the City of Winnipeg Spring Leisure Guide drops very soon. If you want to get your kids into swimming lessons or book a recreation programme, you should log in and update your city account this week so you are ready for the registration rush.

On the grocery front, keep your eyes peeled for surprise sales on staples like dairy and eggs over the next few weeks. The Manitoba government just launched a major grocery pricing study, and with the provincial budget dropping soon, local chains might start running highly competitive promotions to look good. We are also watching for the new federal groceries benefit top-up that is expected to roll out this spring to help ease household budgets.

        Events to Catch

If you need an excuse to plan a date night or a parent escape, the Winnipeg Whisky Festival hits the RBC Convention Centre next week on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7. It is a fantastic excuse to sample some great food pairings and warm up from the inside out.

If whisky is not your thing, First Fridays in the Exchange is happening on March 6. It is a brilliant way to explore local galleries, grab a coffee, and support Winnipeg artists without spending a fortune.

Hockey fans should also clear their Saturday evening schedule. The Winnipeg Jets are taking on the Vancouver Canucks at Canada Life Centre on March 7 for Country Night, which always brings a great crowd and high energy to downtown.

These details and more, updated regularly on our Looking Ahead Page!

        Looking Ahead

        2-WEEKS OUT

March is just days away, bringing that very welcome shift in daylight hours. The snow is not gone yet, but we are slowly inching toward spring weather. As things thaw, pothole season will be back with a vengeance, so keep an eye on your tire pressure and drive carefully to avoid an unexpected MPI claim.

Parents, this is your friendly reminder that Spring Break for most Winnipeg school divisions runs from March 30 to April 3. If you haven't booked your kids into a day camp or planned your time off, start looking into it now before spots fill up.

        3-4 WEEKS OUT

Homeowners should also start thinking about their spring maintenance. Go ahead and book your appointment to swap out those winter tires now before the massive rush hits in April, and circle March 24 on your calendar for the provincial budget announcement to see how it might impact local affordability.

        Indie Coffee Roasters? Yes Please!

There aren't many in Winnipeg, but with the costs of the bean - whole or ground - spiking everywhere thanks to trade and bad crops, it just isn't enough to visit Starbucks any more. So here is a collection of little-known Winnipeg Independent Coffee Roasters along with a HeadsUp Local Directory Listing all about them.
