This Week’s Heads-Up
HeadsUp Quick-links
The Short Version: Late February in Winnipeg means we are in the deep winter stretch. The days are finally getting noticeably longer but the parking lots are still freezing and the wind chill is keeping us bundled up. Festival du Voyageur wraps up this weekend so it is your last chance to grab some maple taffy and enjoy the French Canadian energy in St. Boniface before we all settle in for the wait for spring.

This Weekend
This Week in Food
This is the perfect week for big batch cooking and hearty meals that warm the house. FreshCo is coming in strong as the overall winner for your basic staples with excellent prices on milk and eggs. Sobeys and Safeway are running their Citrus Fest right now making it a great time to stock up on oranges and grapefruits to get a little extra vitamin C. If you are feeding a crowd you will want to look at the root vegetables and bulk potatoes everywhere since those are holding at great prices across the board

Food split by unit, not just tag price:

Grocery Game Plan

Your best move this week is to bridge the gap to the end of the month by shopping your pantry first. Build your dinners around the pasta and rice you already have and just hit the stores for fresh produce and the lowest priced proteins. FreshCo is completely unbeatable for your morning breakfast run with those egg and milk prices. Grab your heavy root vegetables while you are there and you can easily stretch your budget until the March flyer cycles begin

What’s coming This Week?
Coming Soon in/to/for Winnipeg!
If you are heading out to Fort Gibraltar for the final weekend of Festival du Voyageur remember to layer up because standing in the snow feels much colder than walking around. The Winnipeg Jets have some home games at Canada Life Centre right now so downtown parking will be tight on game nights. At home you might want to double check your furnace filter and keep an eye on your pipes with these lingering sub zero temperatures.

Events to Catch
If you are looking to get out of the house this weekend Festival du Voyageur is wrapping up its final days at Voyageur Park. It is your last chance for the season to grab some maple taffy and hear some live fiddling before they pack up on Sunday. If you prefer to stay indoors there is plenty of live music rolling through town including Matt Andersen at the Burton Cummings Theatre on Monday and Megadeth hitting the Canada Life Centre on Wednesday.

2-WEEKS OUT
March is going to bring a very welcome shift in our daylight hours and hopefully some softer temperatures. You will want to start thinking about spring break plans for the kids since late March will be here before we know it.
By the first week of March the sun is setting noticeably later and we start getting those first real hints of spring. If you want a quick day trip the Gimli Ice Festival runs March 7th and 8th offering ice racing and winter activities right on Lake Winnipeg. If you want to stay in the city the Winnipeg Music Festival will be in full swing and the West End Cultural Centre has a packed calendar including Michael Kaeshammer on the 7th. You will also want to start watching for ice dams on your roof as the daytime melting and nighttime freezing cycle kicks into high gear.

3-4 WEEKS OUT

Late March brings us right to the doorstep of spring break so this is the time to start locking in childcare or day camps if you have not already. If you are starting to dream about summer weather Cottage Country's Lake and Cabin Show runs March 20th through the 22nd at Red River Exhibition Park. For a high energy night out Rise Against is playing the Burton Cummings Theatre on March 21st. Out on the roads this is when pothole season truly begins to test our suspensions so you might want to start planning your transition to summer tires as the deep freezes finally start to taper off.
