Chicken Up, Pork Up, Price Report 2026 reflecting extra $1000 spend per family,
Table of Contents
Hey Winnipeg! If your grocery receipts have been giving you some serious sticker shock lately, you are definitely not imagining it.
The latest Canada Food Price Report for 2026 predicts that an average family of four will spend about $994 more on food this year compared to 2025. That is the big picture. The local reality here in Winnipeg is that prices are uneven from aisle to aisle. That means having a solid strategy matters more than ever if we want to keep our budgets on track.
Keep in mind your own preferred memberships, points, discounts, and coupons! This is the time of year it comes in handy - and especially now!
This Week’s Price Floors
These are the lowest verified flyer prices available this week. There are no estimates or averages here, just confirmed flyer pricing. Think of these numbers as a baseline. When prices drift above these levels, it is usually a sign that it is time to pivot.
Category | Floor Price | Item | Store |
|---|---|---|---|
Root vegetables | $0.40 per lb | 10 lb potatoes ($3.99) | No Frills |
Eggs | $0.33 per egg | Large Grade A ($4.00 per dozen) | No Frills |
Butter | $1.10 per 100 g | 454 g block ($4.99, Scene+ member) | FreshCo |
Chicken (whole) | $12.10 per kg | Compliments whole chicken | Sobeys |
Pork (frozen) | $2.49 per lb | boneless | FreshCo |
These are not cheap across the board prices. They are simply the lowest points showing up in flyers this week.
Produce Picks, January’s Quiet Wins
January is officially root vegetable season in Manitoba, and you can see it clearly in the flyers.
My rule of thumb is simple. If it grows underground and stores well, January is usually its cheapest season in our part of the world.
Item | Price | Unit Cost | Store |
|---|---|---|---|
Potatoes (10 lb) | $3.99 | $0.40 per lb | No Frills |
Onions (3 lb) | $1.44 | $0.48 per lb | No Frills |
Carrots (3 lb) | $1.44 | $0.48 per lb | No Frills |
Oranges, loose | $0.88 per lb | $1.94 per kg | Superstore |
These are solid, boring staples, and boring is a good thing in January.
Protein Pulse, Where the Pressure Is
Protein remains the trickiest category for most households, and prices are not moving evenly.
Eggs have stabilized.
A dozen large eggs at No Frills is $4.00, which works out to about $0.33 per egg. That keeps eggs competitive with most meat options right now.
Chicken prices are mixed and still expensive.
At Sobeys this week, whole chickens are advertised at $12.10 per kilogram. Chicken thighs in value packs drop as low as $7.69 per kilogram, while chicken drumsticks in value packs sit around $12.10 per kilogram. Boneless chicken breasts and marinated options are much higher, often well above $20 per kilogram.
Best Prices for Whole Chicken (per kg):
🥇 BEST DEAL: Frozen Whole Frying Chicken at Real Canadian Superstore
$7.67/kg ($3.48/lb)
🥈 SECOND BEST: President's Choice Air Chilled Whole Chicken
No Frills: $8.80/kg ($0.88/100g for 1.7kg)
Real Canadian Superstore: $8.80/kg ($0.88/100g for 1.7kg)
Other Options:
Freshco: $9.90/kg - Compliments Whole Chicken
Sobeys: $12.10/kg - Compliments Whole Chicken
Walmart: $13.00/kg - Maple Leaf Whole Chicken (1.20-2.00 KG)
🏆 BEST PORK DEALS:
No Frills has the closest options to your target:
Pork Loin Half Boneless Frozen: $5.49/kg ($2.49/lb)
Pork Picnic (various cuts): $6.61/kg ($3.00/lb)
Lean Ground Pork (New): $5.00 for 450g = $1.11/100g ($11.10/kg)
Butcher's Choice Medium Ground Pork, Club Pack: $11.02/kg ($5.00/lb)
Real Canadian Superstore has similar pricing:
Pork Loin Half Boneless Frozen: $6.61/kg ($3.00/lb)
Sobeys has pork tenderloin on sale:
Pork Tenderloin (Souvlaki, Honey Garlic, Maple Chipotle): $15.41/kg (was $22.02/kg) - Save $6.61/kg
Walmart generally has higher pork prices:
Best option: Lean Ground Pork: $14.18, $1.04/100g ($10.40/kg)
At this point with protein prices so high a 4-pack tray of chicken can cost up to $30, it is time to investigate the benefits of alternatives like Lentils and relying on eggs more often in larger qantities!
Butter Price Winner
Store | Price | Unit Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
FreshCo | $4.99 | $1.10 per 100 g | Scene+ member price |
No Frills | $5.99 | $1.32 per 100 g | Regular price |
Butter priced under $1.20 per 100 grams is a definite buy. Anything above that is more of a watch and wait item.
The Quiet Price Jump, Coffee
Coffee prices continue to rise because of global supply issues. What has changed recently is that the gap between mass market grocery coffee and locally roasted beans is shrinking.
When grocery store tins push into the high teens, spending a bit more on local roasters becomes less about luxury and more about quality and preference.

Winnipeg Wins, Stretching Your Dollar
Flashfood
It is always worth checking the Superstore locations on Ellice and Gateway. They frequently post meat, cheese, and bakery items at 50 percent off when they are near their best before dates.
Too Good To Go
Bakery surprise bags from Tall Grass Prairie at The Forks often deliver more than $15 worth of baked goods for under $6.
Community Fridges
The West End Commons fridge at 641 St. Matthews Avenue is still active. Take what you need or leave what you can.
What to Act On and What to Just Know
Act this week
Sobeys Lightning Deals end early on January 11. Watch for bundle and multi buy offers that reward stocking up. If you see a break in the weather that makes a larger trip easier, take advantage of it.
Plan around this
Winnipeg Jets home games create predictable pre game grocery rushes. The Forks and local events increase weekend traffic. With school back in session, after school and weekend crowds are back to normal.
Local Love, Looking Ahead
Festival du Voyageur runs from February 13 to February 22. Based on last year, expect tourtiere around $8 to $9 per slice and maple taffy on snow at about $5 per stick. Not cheap, but still far less than a winter flight somewhere warm.
Until then, stay warm, drive safe, and pass the honey dill.

Reset Your Energy and Feel Lighter With a January Liver Reset
January is the perfect time to reset, rebalance, and support your body after the indulgence of the holidays. If you’re doing Dry January or simply craving a fresh start, focusing on liver health can make a powerful difference—and it’s one of the most overlooked wellness rituals.
That’s why I’ve made Pique’s Liver Detox Protocol part of my January reset. Inspired by over 3,000 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this gentle daily ritual supports your body’s natural detoxification processes without harsh cleanses or deprivation.
The protocol includes two simple moments a day: Electric Turmeric in the morning and La Ginger in the evening. In the morning, Electric Turmeric feels warming, grounding, and nourishing—like a calm reset before the day begins. At night, La Ginger is bold and soothing, supporting digestion and overnight renewal.
Within weeks, I noticed steadier energy, less bloating, clearer skin, and an overall lighter feeling. It didn’t feel like a detox—it felt like alignment. Two small rituals, big results.
This week’s report prioritizes confirmed value over volume. If it appears here, it is something a Winnipeg shopper can realistically act on without guesswork. Full price scans resume next cycle. You can reply to this email with any feedback!
