What to Know Before You Go

Some of this week’s strongest prices depend on details that matter at checkout. Beef pricing varies by fat content and pack size, and the lowest price requires a larger family pack. Turkey pricing refers specifically to Grade A frozen birds, while fresh or specialty turkeys often scan higher. A few items, such as butter, are held at a low price only up to a set limit before reverting to regular pricing. These conditions are noted so there are no surprises when you reach the register.

Prices in this report are compiled from Winnipeg-specific flyers, online listings, and store-level checks. We do not physically collect prices inside every store, so availability and final pricing can vary slightly by location and timing.

              Hosting and Holiday Prep

If you are hosting or contributing food this weekend, a short split trip can make sense. Shrimp rings and crackers are cheapest together at No Frills, while butter and eggs are also strongest there if you keep the limits in mind. Flour is one of the few items clearly worth picking up at FreshCo if you are baking in bulk for the holidays.

              Hé Ho! Planning for February

It may feel early, but February’s biggest local pressure point is already predictable. Festival du Voyageur is confirmed to return to Whittier Park from February 13 to 22, 2026. This ten-day stretch in St. Boniface reliably drives up demand for French-Canadian staples such as ground pork, ground beef, pastry dough, and yellow split peas.

Local St. Boniface butchers often see a noticeable run on tourtière ingredients starting in late January, with prices firming up and selection thinning quickly. Buying ground meat and pastry dough during current holiday sales and freezing them now is one of the easiest ways to avoid the February festival premium.

Cheese curds are another seasonal pressure point. Demand for Bothwell curds peaks sharply during festival season, and local supply can tighten. If the curds are intended for melting, such as for poutine, they freeze well. Catching a January sale and stocking ahead can bypass the festival markup entirely.

              2026 Financial Heads-Up

The 2026 Canada Food Price Report, released earlier this month, projects a four to six percent increase in grocery costs next year. For an average family of four, that works out to roughly an extra $994 annually. Meat and bakery staples are expected to see the steepest increases, which adds context to why this week’s verified prices on items like ground beef and flour matter beyond just the next few days.

January and February are traditionally when Winnipeg retailers push deeper discounts on soups, broths, and baking supplies. Using the current holiday lull to clear freezer space now can make it easier to take advantage of those winter-comfort promotions when they arrive next month.

              One Last Thing!

If you could support or investigate my sponsors it would really help me out!

Meet the Best Alcohol Replacement of the Season

As the nights get colder and holiday gatherings fill the calendar, I’ve been craving a new kind of ritual—something warm, social, and feel-good, without the fogginess that often follows a drink. And this season, I found it.

Meet Vesper, Pique’s brand-new, non-alcoholic adaptogenic aperitif—and truly one of the most exciting launches they’ve ever released. Crafted with rare botanicals and science-backed ingredients, it delivers everything I love about a drink: the unwind, the mood lift, the sense of connection… just without the alcohol.

Each sip brings a soft drop in the shoulders, a gentle lift in spirit, and a clear, grounded presence. Sparkling, tart, and herbaceous, Vesper feels luxurious and intentionally crafted—perfect for holiday parties, cozy nights in, and an elevated start to Dry January.

Because it’s new (and already going viral), it will sell out fast.
