This Week’s Essentials at a Glance

Superstore and No-Frills are usually the best places for shoppers looking for the lowest everyday prices across the most grocery categories in Winnipeg, based on recent comparisons. These stores offer the cheapest rates on many staple items like fruits, vegetables, bread, and dairy—so if you want to do one big shop at a single store, Superstore offers the widest selection with consistently low prices, while No-Frills has excellent bargain deals if you don’t mind sticking to their brand and weekly specials.

From current shopper reports and local price comparisons, Walmart comes up next in terms of everyday low prices, and is especially strong on pantry staples, canned goods, and some meat bargains. Sobeys, Frescho, and other chains usually have higher prices on average, but sometimes surprise shoppers with great weekly flyers or in-store deals—so scanning the flyers before you shop can pay off, especially for produce or bakery discounts. If saving money is your main goal and you don’t want to use coupons or collect points, picking Superstore or No-Frills for your one-stop shop is the best choice.

Halloween Candy at the Best Price

For Halloween candy, major chains like Superstore, No-Frills, and Walmart set out the best sales a week or two before Halloween, with bulk bags appearing in the seasonal section by mid-October. The lowest prices usually pop up at No-Frills and Superstore when stores compete for shoppers—look for flyer deals on bulk chocolates, fun-size bars, and big assorted packs. Shopping about 7–10 days before Halloween means you’ll get the best mix of variety and value, but don’t wait until the last day because the cheapest brands and biggest bags may sell out fast. For extra savings, smaller convenience stores and places like Dollarama sometimes offer unique deals on novelty toys or treat bags ideal for trick-or-treat handouts.

Shopping with a plan, a list, and saving leftovers can really help with the wallet

The rush for grocery bargains is intensifying. Shoppers report that loyalty programs (like PC Optimum at Superstore) and price matching at No-Frills and FreshCo help cushion your bill. Walmart, Superstore, and No-Frills have returned bulk bin snacks and bigger bag deals. Watch out—Snap sales and “2 for...” deals tend to rotate fast, so plan ahead for the best offers.

We want to expand our list, but only if it’s useful!

More stores now post “locally grown” produce—try Manitoba potatoes or carrots for fresher taste and to support local farmers. Watch for stickers and shelf signs marking Manitoba-grown foods. Higher prices? Local produce is in season and often cheaper this month than imported. If YOU would like a product highlighted please consider reaching out to us with new items to add to the list of 60 we offer!

            Seasonal Classic Dishes!!

Pumpkin Soup is a fall favorite that’s cozy, creamy, and cheap to make. Just grab a small pie pumpkin (or even canned pumpkin), some onions, carrots, and a splash of milk or cream. Sauté the veggies until soft, add the pumpkin, broth, and seasonings, then blend it all up for a silky bowl of autumn comfort. Serve with crusty bread—you’ll impress everyone, and most ingredients are on special this month at Superstore or No-Frills.

Hearty Potato & Carrot Mash is always a hit, especially as the weather gets colder and root vegetables go on sale. Boil up fresh Manitoba potatoes and carrots, then mash them together with butter and a bit of milk for a naturally sweet, fluffy side dish. Sprinkle with chopped green onions (only a dollar a bunch right now!) to add a pop of color. It’s easy, filling, and local farmers are delivering amazing flavor this season.

Classic Apple Crisp is a timeless dessert that takes advantage of those cheap fall apples stacking up in stores now. All you need are baking apples, a splash of lemon juice, oats, flour, sugar, and a bit of butter. Tumble the apples in a pan, cover with oats and crumb topping, then bake until golden—your whole house will smell like cinnamon! Apple crisp is delicious with or without ice cream, so it’s a perfect crowd-pleaser that won’t break the bank.

Veggie-Packed Chili is perfect for cool days and budget cooking. Winnipeg stores are full of canned beans, tomatoes, and bargain veggies—like peppers and celery—that work great in a chili. Brown a little ground beef or skip it for a vegetarian twist, then let everything simmer with chili powder and garlic. Chili makes dinner for days, tastes better after a night in the fridge, and is a smart way to stretch your grocery dollars while eating something full of flavor.

Late February in Winnipeg means we are in the deep winter stretch.
